Sand Production Risk Assessment
To determine the risk of sand production, the formation strength - as determined using Thick-Walled Cylinder (TWC) strength tests - must be compared to the loading conditions in the field
A number of models are available; however, at Fractech, a semi-empirical model developed by Shell is currently used. This model is directly applicable to perforated, cemented line completions, where the internal diameter of the perforation tunnel is similar to that of the internal bore in the TWC samples. The model can be applied to predict the stability of an open-hole completion, once scaling effects have been accounted for.
At Fractech we are currently developing improved methods of Sand Production Prediction, contributing our expertise in this field to the PEA 135 joint industry project. This effort includes calibration against field data and is currently open to new members.
